The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF®), the leading trade association for the firearm industry, is calling on President-elect Donald Trump to take swift and decisive action to disband the controversial White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The office, established by President Joe Biden, has come under scrutiny for its overreach and failure to address the core issue of criminal misuse of firearms. Instead, it has been accused of undermining the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and misusing taxpayer dollars to support anti-gun policies.
Since its inception in September 2023, the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, led by Vice President Kamala Harris, has been primarily focused on implementing gun control measures rather than addressing the root causes of gun violence. This office has been accused of advancing policies that limit the rights of lawful gun owners, promote anti-gun rhetoric, and prioritize the interests of special interest groups, such as gun control lobbies, over the rights of American citizens.
According to Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF’s Senior Vice President & General Counsel, this office has become a "blunt instrument" used against the Constitution’s Second Amendment protections. The NSSF argues that it is fundamentally wrong for American taxpayers to fund an office that promotes policies which directly infringe upon their Constitutionally-protected rights.
“This office was established to appease the special-interest gun control lobby and donors," said Keane. "The Biden-Harris administration has used this office to justify unconstitutional, whole-of-government attacks on Second Amendment rights and the industry that makes those rights possible to exercise.”
The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention has been staffed by individuals with deep ties to anti-gun organizations. Stefanie Feldman, the director of the office, has a history of advocating for policies that target the firearm industry. She has openly expressed her intention to undermine firearm manufacturers by attempting to overturn the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which provides legal protections to gun manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits. Feldman’s public statements, including one in which she vowed to “defeat” firearm manufacturers, further highlight the office’s anti-gun agenda.
Additionally, Greg Jackson, the Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the office, has a background as a gun control advocate, having worked with the Tides Foundation’s Community Justice Action Fund, which is known for its far-left stance on gun control. Rob Wilcox, another key staff member, previously worked as a lobbyist for Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization founded by billionaire Michael Bloomberg that advocates for the banning of entire classes of firearms and seeks to bankrupt the gun industry through costly lawsuits.
Critics of the office argue that it has not only failed to address gun violence in a meaningful way but has also taken actions that harm both the firearm industry and the rights of law-abiding Americans. The office has been linked to several controversial policy positions, including an ill-fated attempt to cut funding for hunter safety courses in public schools. This proposal, which was blocked by Congress, exemplified the office’s disregard for the interests of responsible gun owners and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The office’s collaboration with anti-gun organizations has also led to a series of questionable actions. One of the most notable examples is the alleged pressure placed on GLOCK, Inc. to alter handgun designs, along with its involvement in coordinating a frivolous lawsuit against the company in partnership with the City of Chicago. These actions reflect an ongoing pattern of overreach and political pressure designed to weaken the firearm industry.
In response to these concerns, the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into the activities of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Both the office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have yet to comply with subpoenas issued by Chairman James Comer, further raising questions about the transparency and accountability of this office.
The NSSF believes that President-elect Trump has the opportunity to take a bold stand in support of the Second Amendment by disbanding the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and replacing it with a new office dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Americans' constitutional rights.
By dismantling this office, President-elect Trump can send a clear message that his administration will not tolerate government overreach when it comes to the rights of law-abiding gun owners. In its place, an office focused on protecting the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment would help restore balance and ensure that policies are created to safeguard the rights of all citizens without resorting to unconstitutional measures.
The NSSF's call for action serves as a reminder that the Second Amendment is not just a political issue—it is a fundamental right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Americans must continue to fight against efforts that undermine these freedoms, and the time to act is now. The disbanding of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention would be a vital step toward preserving the rights of gun owners and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are not wasted on policies that threaten American liberties.
