Your Only Competition Is Who You Were Yesterday

Steve Kelly • April 25, 2025

Faith. Family. Business. Life. Don’t Compete With Others. Compete With Yesterday’s You.

Stop Looking Sideways. Start Looking Inward.

There’s one person you need to beat today: the man or woman you were yesterday.

Not the guy with a bigger house.
Not the business down the street.
Not the family that seems picture-perfect on Instagram.

Your real competition is you. That’s where the battle is. And it plays out every single day in your faith, your family, your business, and your personal habits.

Let’s break it down.

Faith – Compete for the Person God Made You to Be

Your Walk with God Isn’t Meant to Look Like Theirs

We all grow in faith at different paces. Some people seem naturally devoted, but your relationship with God is personal, intimate, and built over time. You’re not called to be like them. You’re called to become who God made you to be.

Start by building your daily spiritual habits.

Examples of competing against yourself in faith:

  • 📖 Yesterday you didn’t read the Bible. Today, you read one Proverb or Psalm before breakfast.
  • 🙏 Yesterday you rushed your morning. Today, you pause and pray for 5 minutes with your spouse or kids.
  • 📝 Yesterday your spiritual life was drifting. Today, you write down three things you’re thankful for in a prayer journal.

Make it simple. Make it consistent. That’s progress.

Family – Be a Better Husband, Wife, Parent, or Child Than You Were Yesterday

Lead Your Home with Purpose, Not Perfection

You don’t have to be a perfect dad, mom, or spouse. Just a more present one. Every day, there’s a chance to choose connection over distraction, love over indifference, and leadership over passivity.

Examples of growing stronger in your family life:

  • 🍽️ Yesterday you were on your phone during dinner. Today, you put it away and ask your kids one question about their day.
  • 💬 Yesterday you were short with your spouse. Today, you speak a word of encouragement or say thank you for something small.
  • 📅 Yesterday you postponed family time. Today, you schedule a 30-minute walk, a game night, or a weekend outing.

Your family doesn’t need perfection. They need you. Present. Intentional. Growing.

Business – Outwork the Old You, Not Someone Else’s Success

You’re Not Competing With Their Metrics. Just Your Mission.

In the business world, it’s easy to compare revenue, social media followers, email lists, or five-star reviews. But your mission isn’t theirs. Their wins don’t take anything from you.

The goal is to serve better than you did yesterday.

Examples of daily competition in business:

  • 📞 Yesterday you made 5 follow-ups. Today, you make 8.
  • 📊 Yesterday you didn’t track your sales. Today, you take 10 minutes to write down numbers and review your goals.
  • 💡 Yesterday you put off content. Today, you record a short reel, send a client message, or publish one post that speaks your values.

Don’t chase what someone else is building. Build the thing God put in your hands.

Personal Growth – Discipline Over Emotion, Daily Over Eventually

Feelings Lie. Discipline Tells the Truth.

You won’t always feel like doing the work. But if you’re relying on feelings, you’re giving up your power.

Discipline is the bridge between who you are and who you’re becoming.

Examples of leveling up personally:

  • 🏋️‍♂️ Yesterday you skipped your workout. Today, you hit a 20-minute kettlebell session or take a 5k ruck.
  • 📚 Yesterday you scrolled for 30 minutes. Today, you read 10 pages of a book that sharpens your mind or spirit.
  • 🧊 Yesterday you slept in. Today, you take a cold shower and face the day with mental toughness.

It’s not about being extreme. It’s about being better. Every single day.

Write It Down. Measure It. Own It.

Goals don’t live in your head. They belong on paper.

Set goals for each area of life — faith, family, business, and personal — and revisit them regularly. Don’t just wing it. Don’t just wish for it. Plan it. Track it. Adjust it.

How to build accountability:

  • 🗓️ Schedule a weekly “Sunday reset” to review where you won and where you can improve.
  • 🤝 Share your goals with someone who will check in on you.
  • ✅ Use a whiteboard, a journal, or even a sticky note system. Whatever keeps it visible and real.

Accountability keeps your compass pointed toward the man or woman you want to be.

Conclusion: You’re Not Behind. You’re Becoming.

Progress isn’t loud. It’s not flashy. But it is everything.

  • Grow in your faith.
  • Lead your family.
  • Build your business with purpose.
  • Train yourself like a warrior.

Every day, aim to beat the person you were yesterday.

Call to Action:

➡️ Write down one small, measurable goal for each of these four areas:

  • FAITH
  • FAMILY
  • BUSINESS
  • PERSONAL GROWTH

➡️ Commit to doing it today, not tomorrow.
➡️ Share this post with someone who needs to hear it. It’s you vs. you, and that’s enough.
